So, who recognizes these lines from my all-time favourite travel movie? That’s right – Eat, Pray, Love. To me, it’s not only the ultimate feel-good-movie but also a little source of inspiration for my upcoming journey.
No, I’m not flying to Italy, then India, and ending the year in Bali. As many of you may already know, my trip begins in Mexico. And this time, I truly don’t want to plan everything down to the last detail but rather let fate take its course, at least to some extent. Still, I sometimes catch myself daydreaming … and secretly making plans.
In my imagination, this trip could become a kind of Eat, Pray, Love 2.0. A journey of self-discovery – only with a Latin American twist. Maybe it’s finally time to start writing my first book. The title? Tacos, Tinder, Temazcal.
Tacos, Tinder, Temazcal
At the beginning of her journey, Liz Gilbert dives deep into Italian culture and rediscovers the simple joy of eating – “Eat.” Not hard when you’re surrounded by delicious pizza and pasta – which I could totally bury myself in as well.
My journey, however, kicks off in Mexico – more precisely, in Ciudad de Mexico. Some of you might already know that Mexican cuisine is also top tier. Tacos are just the tip of the iceberg. The culinary richness of Mexico is so vast, it has even been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. I recently came across an Instagram post claiming that Mexican food is scientifically proven to release the most serotonin. Good vibes guaranteed.
Like Liz in Italy, I’ll also spend time with friends in Mexico – some of whom I met during my exchange semester in Chile. And just like she picks up some Italian, I’ll be brushing up on my Spanish – although I already speak it, it will certainly take a little time to readjust. All in all, Mexico seems like the perfect place to begin the “Eat” chapter of my journey: amazing food, great friends, and some good energy.
After the foodie phase, Liz travels to India to meditate in an Ashram and reconnect with herself. While India is seen by many as the ultimate spiritual destination, spirituality is also deeply rooted in the culture of other countries. For example in Guatemala.
I had the chance to get to know the country during my internship in Costa Rica, and something about it is calling me back. Even though Christianity is now the dominant religion in Guatemala, the spirit of the ancient Mayas is still alive. Spiritual travel in Guatemala might lead you to ancient temples, the mystical Lake Atitlán, or healing rituals like cacao ceremonies, sweat lodge sessions (Temazcal), or fire ceremonies. Guatemala lies just south of Mexico – so it would be the natural next stop on my journey. No Ashram, but very much in the spirit of “Pray.”
What’s still missing is the “Love” – the part Liz experiences in Bali when she falls in love with a Brazilian.
And me? I don’t yet know where my journey will end. Brazil is just around the corner. Or maybe Colombia? Argentina? Or somewhere completely unexpected. That part’s still written in the stars. Some things are better left to chance. Who knows – maybe true love is waiting in a place I haven’t even considered yet.
Where would your very own Eat, Pray, Love journey take you? Which countries would fulfill you – culinarily, spiritually, or emotionally? What’s essential for your path to self-discovery? And hey – maybe you’ve even got some tips on where to go to find love 😉.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, or dream destinations – drop them in the comments!
Bussi Baba!
